La g\u00e9ographie joue aussi un r\u00f4le important. Certains v\u00e9hicules passent tous leurs hivers \u00e0 rouler dans la neige fondue sal\u00e9e. D&#039;autres vivent dans l&#039;air humide du littoral. Certains sont constamment expos\u00e9s au gravier, au sable et aux cycles de gel-d\u00e9gel qui endommagent les rev\u00eatements protecteurs avant m\u00eame que la corrosion ne commence.<\/p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 .75rem; line-height: 1.75;\">C\u2019est pourquoi le Canada ne conna\u00eet pas un seul probl\u00e8me de rouille sur les v\u00e9hicules, mais plusieurs. Nul besoin d\u2019\u00eatre chimiste\u00a0:<\/p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 .75rem; line-height: 1.75;\"><strong>1. Le sel transforme l&#039;eau inoffensive en un liquide agressif.<\/strong> L&#039;eau de pluie pure rouille lentement l&#039;acier. Avec du sel, cette m\u00eame eau devient bien plus efficace pour corroder l&#039;acier\u00a0: le film sal\u00e9 qui se forme sur un ch\u00e2ssis agit sur le m\u00e9tal beaucoup plus rapidement que l&#039;eau claire.<\/p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 .75rem; line-height: 1.75;\"><strong>2. Le sel enl\u00e8ve la couche protectrice invisible de l&#039;acier.<\/strong> L&#039;acier forme naturellement une pellicule protectrice extr\u00eamement fine \u00e0 sa surface, ce qui explique en partie pourquoi une voiture propre ne rouille pas du jour au lendemain. Le sel d\u00e9truit cette pellicule et continue de la d\u00e9truire en tentant de se reformer. Il en r\u00e9sulte des piq\u00fbres\u00a0: de petits trous profonds qui percent les conduites de frein et le ch\u00e2ssis au lieu de rester en surface.<\/p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 .75rem; line-height: 1.75;\"><strong>3. Le sel maintient le m\u00e9tal humide alors qu&#039;il devrait \u00eatre sec ou gel\u00e9.<\/strong> Le sel attire l&#039;humidit\u00e9 de l&#039;air et emp\u00eache l&#039;eau de geler. La neige fondue accumul\u00e9e dans les passages de roues reste liquide et continue de corroder les pneus, m\u00eame \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures o\u00f9 l&#039;eau pure aurait gel\u00e9 et cess\u00e9 de geler.<\/p><p style=\"margin: 0 0 .75rem; line-height: 1.75;\">Et il y a une touche de modernit\u00e9\u00a0: de nombreuses villes pulv\u00e9risent d\u00e9sormais <strong>saumure liquide<\/strong> Au lieu d&#039;\u00e9pandre du sel de d\u00e9neigement.
