Marine Corrosion Restoration

Marine Corrosion Restoration for Seaforth Environmental

In summer 2026, NanoTech Innovation Inc. completed a marine corrosion restoration project for Seaforth Environmental Services. The work covered approximately 16,000 sq. ft. across two operational 500-ton steel barges, landing crafts, tugboats, pilings and floating docks completed during Summer 2026.

The objective was to address existing corrosion, restore protective barrier layers and carry out the work with minimal disruption to vessel availability.

About Seaforth Environmental

Seaforth Environmental Service Ltd. is a British Columbia-based marine operations and environmental services company with more than 45 years of experience in the marine sector.

The company combines marine environmental services with towing, barge and crane support, and other on-water operations. Its fleet includes tugboats, landing craft and barges, and water taxi vessels.

For an operator working in active marine environments, maintaining the condition and availability of its vessels and steel assets is an important part of day-to-day operations.

Corrosion in a Working Marine Environment

Marine steel is continuously exposed to conditions that can accelerate corrosion and coating deterioration. Saltwater, moisture, abrasion and UV exposure are among the common challenges affecting marine vessels and structures, as outlined by the Association for Materials Protection and Performance.

Across Seaforth’s assets corrosion has been showing up after years of salt exposure, tidal wetting and deck loading.

A full replacement or dry-docking was undesirable because of the cost and extended time out of service involved. The restoration therefore needed to address the existing corrosion, rebuild barrier protection and fit within the operational requirements and environmental considerations.

Building the Coating System

AnarPrime™ Ultra was selected as the corrosion-control foundation for the project. The steel surfaces were pressure washed and prepared to remove salt deposits, marine growth and loose material before coating.

Two coats of AnarPrime™ Ultra were then applied to the prepared corroded steel. NanoTech Innovation Inc.’s technology is designed to interact with existing corrosion, seals it and create a stable, paintable foundation for the protective coating layers that follow.

The project used a multi-layer coating system. A coat of a high-build epoxy was applied over the treated surfaces to add film thickness and barrier resistance.

The system was completed with polysiloxane coat as the finish coat, providing additional durability, weathering resistance, and gloss and colour retention for above-waterline surfaces exposed to marine conditions.

Restoration Without Dry-Docking

The restoration was carried out on site, without the need to dry-dock either barge. This provided a lot of saving and helped reduce the downtime associated with the project.

The water-based AnarPrime™ Ultra corrosion-control layer also supported a more environmentally responsible maintenance approach while reducing worker exposure to hazardous materials.

A Practical Marine Application

The Seaforth project provides a practical example of how NanoTech Innovation Inc.’s corrosion technology can be incorporated into a broader protective coating system for large working marine assets. The project also demonstrates the importance of considering the complete operating environment. Surface condition, salt and moisture exposure, mechanical wear, coating compatibility and vessel availability all influenced how the restoration work was planned and executed.

NanoTech Innovation Inc. continues to develop corrosion solutions for demanding industrial applications, including projects where extensive surface preparation or prolonged operational shutdowns can be difficult to accommodate.
